About Us

What's A Cat Café?

Cat cafes began in Taiwan, with one opening in Taipei in 1998.  The cafe became popular with Japanese tourists as well as local visitors, who enjoyed the opportunity to interact with some furry friends.

Since then, cat cafes have spread first to Japan and now throughout the world.  Currently you can find them in Korea, Austria, Spain, Hungary, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Cat cafes moved into North America in 2014, with the first one opening in Montreal and then moved into the United States.

Cat Cafes in the United States:

Within the US, compliance with food service regulations has been a challenge. The Japanese are known for being a very clean society. They allow cat cafes to serve food and drink in the area where the cats are. But sadly, that’s not how it works in the United States.

Café 1321 had to separate the cat areas from the food which is the reason for the separate housing and food/drink rooms; but as soon as you step inside the cat room, you’ll forget all about the design challenges as you enjoy spending time with our furry friends.

Adoptable pets

How it works:

Procedure

  • You’ll check in at the front desk when you arrive. We know you’re anxious to get in to interact with the cats but we’ll need to check you in and get your food or drink items ordered first. Café 1321 is proud to feature:
  • Coffee, water and soft drinks
  • Packaged Snacks
  • We’ll have you wait until your designated time to head in to the cat room.
  • It is possible that we may fill up during peak times, so we strongly encourage reservations so that you’re not disappointed with the wait to get in. We’ll do our best to allow walk in visitors, but there is a chance you won’t be able to get in without a wait.

Dos & Don'ts

  • We know that many of you may have cats at home, but things work differently at Café 1321. Since we are working with our local animal shelters and want to make sure their cats are treated well, we ask our patrons to do the following:
    • Be respectful of the animals and learn the signs they show when they want you to ease back. We have posted signs describing the way cats show discomfort with their tails and their ears. Please keep these in mind when interacting with the cats.
    • Don’t pick up the cats. Most cats don’t like to be held, and they are not shy about letting you know this. We don’t want anyone to get scratched or bitten by a cat who’s not happy about being picked up.
    • Children must be supervised at all times. At Café 1321, we want to make sure that we can continue to allow children to learn how to interact with animals. We need your help in ensuring this. Please ensure that your children are respectful of the cats.
    • Cats don’t like loud noises, so please keep your voices down when visiting.
    • Photography is fine — the internet is all about cat pictures and videos! However, flash photography disturbs the cats, so please refrain from that.
    • Don't be a sourpuss, the Cat Café has a zero tolerance policy for any individual who is causing distress to the animals. It’s a rare occasion for us to have to ask someone to leave and we kindly ask your help to keep it that way.

Benefits

Public Foster Home

There are many benefits for foster homes for cats. Here are some of them:

  • Fostering saves the lives of millions of cats. By freeing up space for The Rescue House’s fosters to take in additional cats, more animals can be saved.
  • Fostering allows animals that require special attention to get it.  By taking in adoptable, human-friendly animals, other foster homes will be able to give that attention to cats who need socialization, have trust issues, or who just need a little extra help.
  • The environment at The Cat Cafe gives our feline guests a chance to feel at home. And, they get used to interacting with a lot of people. This means that cats adopted here won’t be the ones who hide when visitors arrive.
  • Potential adopters will be able to learn more about the personality of the cats.  Staff and volunteers learn about the personalities of the cats. Then they can match them with the perfect adopter.

We Focus on the Welfare of the Animals

Yes, we aim to make money at Cafe 1321. But we do it in an ethical way. Unhappy and angry cats don’t draw in customers. That’s why we work hard to make sure the cats are in a happy and healthy environment.

  • We provide all of our animals with an area to retreat into when they no longer want to interact with customers.

  • We also monitor the room to make sure all interactions with the animals are appropriate.

  • We treat the animals at Cafe 1321very well. That way, they can show their true personalities to potential adopters and find the most perfect homes!
